Dozens of countries now offer a visa specifically for people who work remotely for employers or clients somewhere else. The headlines make them sound like an open door. They are genuinely useful and genuinely narrower than the coverage suggests, and the gap between those two things is where people waste months.
What the visa actually is
A digital nomad visa gives you legal permission to reside in a country for an extended period while earning your income from outside it. That last clause is the entire product. It is not a work permit for the local economy; it is permission to be present while your money comes from elsewhere.
Which solves a real problem. Tourist entry is short, extending it is uncertain, and working — even remotely — on a tourist stamp sits somewhere between a gray area and a clear violation depending on the country. A nomad visa replaces "hope nobody asks" with an actual legal basis.
Where your income comes from. Arbitrage only works if you are earning at home-country rates and spending at local ones. Earning locally usually erases the entire advantage — and it is exactly what these visas prohibit.
The requirements, in the shape they almost always take
The specifics vary enormously and change without notice, so treat this as the pattern rather than the rules:
A minimum income threshold, evidenced with several months of bank statements and often a contract. This is the main filter and it is frequently higher than people expect.
Proof the income is foreign. An employment contract with a non-local company, or client invoices.
Health insurance covering the whole stay. Almost universal, and usually specified in coverage terms rather than just "some insurance". This is the requirement people most often get bounced on.
A clean criminal record certificate, often needing an apostille, which takes weeks in your home country and cannot be rushed at the last minute.
Accommodation evidence, sometimes for the full period.

The tax question everyone gets wrong

A nomad visa is an immigration product. It says nothing about your tax position, and the two are governed by completely different rules. Some countries tax by citizenship, some by residency, and the two can overlap — meaning it is entirely possible to owe tax in two places at once.
Several of these visas come with a tax incentive attached, and several very much do not. And spending enough days in a country can make you tax-resident there regardless of what your visa says.
This is worth one conversation with an actual professional who handles expatriate cases, not a forum thread. It is the cheapest money you will spend on the whole move.
What these visas do not give you
The right to work locally. Taking a local job, or local clients, generally breaches the terms.
A path to permanent residency, in most cases. Some convert, many are explicitly dead-end. If long-term settlement is the goal, check this before anything else — it changes which country you should be applying to entirely.
Access to public healthcare, usually. Hence the insurance requirement.
Certainty. These programs are new, politically fashionable, and have been suspended, repriced and rewritten at short notice in several countries.
How to approach it sensibly
Go and live there first, on whatever entry you are entitled to. A month or a season, buying groceries and paying for the day-to-day rather than vacationing. The visa is the last step, not the first — and a surprising number of people discover in week three that they do not actually want to live there.
Check the official immigration source for your own nationality, and check it again a fortnight before applying. Requirements change quietly and the blog posts do not update.
Start the criminal record certificate early. It is the long pole in almost every application.
Price the whole thing honestly, including the insurance, the fees, the apostilles and the tax advice. It is not the headline number.

A digital nomad visa converts a legally awkward situation into a clean one, and for anyone spending real months abroad that is worth a great deal. But it is an immigration document, not a tax plan, it requires foreign income and full health cover, and the paperwork takes longer than the marketing suggests. Visit first, read the official source, start the police certificate early, and get one hour of proper tax advice before you commit.
