Mexico City is one of the great food cities on earth and most visitors arrive not knowing it. They come for the pyramids and the museums, and leave talking about a taco they ate standing on a street corner at midnight. The museums are genuinely world-class. The food is the reason people come back.

The food, which is the point

Tacos, properly understood

A taco in Mexico City is not the thing sold under that name elsewhere. Small corn tortillas, one filling, onion, coriander, salsa, lime. Eaten standing at a stall, two or three at a time, for very little money.

Beyond tacos

Tlacoyos, quesadillas (which in Mexico City may not contain cheese unless you ask), tortas, tamales for breakfast, mole in its many regional forms, and a fine-dining scene that includes several restaurants regularly named among the world's best.

The stall rule One item, a queue of locals, and a cook who doesn't look up. Mexico City's best food costs almost nothing and is sold by people who have made the same thing for decades.

Mexico City on the calculator

Mexico City sits at roughly 2.4x for most US budgets — and the food scene alone justifies the visit.
