Bangkok overwhelms people for about a day and then, if they've set it up right, becomes one of the easiest great cities in the world. The heat, the traffic and the scale are all real. So are the Skytrain that floats above the traffic, the food that costs almost nothing and beats most restaurant meals anywhere, and the hotels that deliver five-star quality at prices that make no sense.
Where to stay, and why it decides your trip
Bangkok's traffic can turn a four-kilometre journey into fifty minutes. The single most important decision you make is staying within walking distance of a BTS Skytrain or MRT station. Everything else follows from that.
- Sukhumvit (Asok, Phrom Phong, Thonglor) — the best all-round choice. Excellent transport, the strongest restaurant scene, malls, and good value hotels.
- Silom and Sathorn — the business district. Quieter at weekends, close to Lumpini Park, good for the river.
- Riverside — the grand hotels and the best sunset views. Further from the Skytrain but the river boats are a genuine pleasure.
- Ratchaprasong (Chit Lom, Siam) — the shopping centre of the city, connected by covered walkways to several malls.
- Khao San Road — the backpacker strip. Cheap, chaotic, and badly connected to the Skytrain. Not the base most people should choose.
Getting around
The BTS Skytrain and MRT subway are clean, air-conditioned, cheap and above the traffic. Get a stored-value card and use them for everything you can. Grab handles the gaps. The Chao Phraya Express boats are both transport and sightseeing — the orange-flag boat is the local one and costs almost nothing.
Tuk-tuks are a tourist experience rather than transport. Agree the price before getting in, and know that a Grab will almost always be cheaper and cooler.
Where to eat
Bangkok's street food is genuinely world-class and the price difference between the best stall and a mediocre restaurant is enormous in the stall's favour. The method: find the queue of Thai people, join it, point at what the person in front ordered.
- Chinatown (Yaowarat) after dark — the densest street food in the city.
- Pad kra pao — minced meat with holy basil and a fried egg. The national working lunch.
- Khao man gai — Hainanese chicken rice, sold from pink-uniformed stalls.
- Boat noodles — small intense bowls, eaten several at a time. Victory Monument is the traditional spot.
- Mango sticky rice — in season roughly March to June, and worth planning around.
Don't miss
- The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew — go early, dress properly (shoulders and knees covered, enforced strictly).
- Wat Pho — the reclining Buddha, and a traditional Thai massage school on site.
- Wat Arun — across the river, best at sunset from the opposite bank.
- Chatuchak Weekend Market — thousands of stalls, weekends only. Go early before the heat builds.
- A rooftop bar — Bangkok does these better than almost anywhere. Dress codes apply at the famous ones.
The honest caveats
- The heat is serious from March to May. Plan indoor activities for the middle of the day and move in the morning and evening.
- Scams target tourists around the Grand Palace specifically — the “temple is closed” gem scam is decades old and still running.
- Air quality can be poor in the dry season, particularly January to March.
- Dress codes at temples are enforced. Cover shoulders and knees or you will be turned away.
