Turbulence is the single biggest source of fear in the air and almost none of that fear is proportionate to the risk. It is not dangerous to the aircraft. It is, in a specific and entirely preventable way, occasionally dangerous to people. Understanding which is which is what turns a horrible flight into a mildly annoying one.

What is actually happening

Air is a fluid, and like any fluid it has currents, eddies and boundaries where two flows of different speed or temperature meet. An aircraft moving through it at speed feels those changes as movement.

There are three common causes:

Thermal. Warm ground heats air, that air rises in columns, and you fly through them. This is why afternoon flights over hot land are bumpier than dawn flights over the sea.

Mechanical. Air flowing over mountains or big structures breaks up downstream, the way water does behind a rock.

Shear, including clear-air turbulence. Two layers of air moving at very different speeds slide past each other — often near a jet stream. This is the kind that arrives without cloud to warn anybody, which is why it is the one that catches cabins by surprise.

THE PART THAT SHOULD REASSURE YOU

The aircraft is not being pushed toward its limits. Wings are tested to bend far beyond anything they meet in service, and turbulence-related structural failure on a modern airliner is essentially not a thing that happens.

Why the flight deck is calm

Pilots treat turbulence roughly the way a driver treats a rough road surface: an issue of comfort and of not spilling the coffee, not an issue of survival.

A few facts that explain the calm. The aircraft is not "dropping hundreds of feet" — that sensation is your inner ear exaggerating a change of a few dozen feet at most. The wings are designed to flex, and that flexing is the structure working correctly rather than a warning sign. And crews have weather radar, turbulence reports from aircraft ahead of them on the same route, and forecast charts, so most of it is anticipated rather than discovered.

What the crew actually does is practical: change altitude to find smoother air, slow to the turbulence penetration speed, and switch the seatbelt sign on. That last one is the entire safety story.

The real risk, and it is entirely preventable

Turbulence injuries do happen, and they follow an overwhelmingly consistent pattern: the people injured are the ones who were not wearing a seatbelt. Passengers standing in the aisle, people who unbuckled to use the toilet, and cabin crew, who by the nature of the job spend the most time on their feet.

The aircraft moves, and anything not attached to it keeps going. That is the whole mechanism.

So the single piece of advice that matters more than everything else on this page: keep your belt loosely fastened whenever you are seated, even when the sign is off. It costs nothing, you will not notice it, and it removes essentially all of your personal risk from the one genuine hazard here. Clear-air turbulence gives no warning, which is precisely why "I'll buckle up when it starts" does not work.

How to have a less unpleasant flight

Sit over the wing. Closest to the aircraft's center of gravity, so it moves least. The rear of the cabin moves most, in the same way the back of a bus does.

Fly early. Thermal turbulence builds with the day's heat.

Expect it on certain routes. Anything crossing mountains, and certain ocean crossings near the jet stream, are reliably bumpier.

Watch the crew, not the window. If they are relaxed, and they will be, that is the most accurate instrument available to you.

Air vents and cool air help nausea more than most people expect, as does looking at the horizon rather than at a screen.

If it genuinely frightens you

Fear of flying is common and it is treatable. Several airlines run courses, and the techniques — understanding the mechanics, controlled breathing, and knowing what each noise is — work well for a lot of people. Knowing that the bumps are a comfort problem rather than a safety problem is, for most nervous flyers, the largest single piece of it.

The bottom line

Turbulence is rough air, not a failing aircraft. The structure is nowhere near its limits, the crew is treating it as a comfort issue, and the only real risk is being unrestrained when it hits. Fasten the belt loosely for the whole flight, sit over the wing, fly early where you can — and then let the airplane do the thing it was extremely well designed to do.
