Central Vietnam gives you a genuinely pleasant problem: two excellent places thirty minutes apart, and a real choice about where to base yourself. Most people visit both — the question is which one anchors your stay. Get it wrong and you spend too much time in taxis. Get it right and the whole trip clicks.
The short version
Stay in Da Nang if you want a beach base, a full working city with everything a city should have, better hotel value, and easy access to a wider region.
Stay in Hoi An if you want atmosphere above everything else, the most walkable old town in Vietnam, no cars in the Ancient Town in the evenings, and a slightly more self-contained trip.
The slightly longer version: most people are better served by basing in Da Nang and spending a day or two in Hoi An than they are by the reverse. The reason is not that Da Nang is better — it is that Da Nang gives you everything Hoi An gives you on a day trip, plus things Hoi An cannot.
What Da Nang has that Hoi An does not
- A real beach. Hoi An has An Bang and Cua Dai, which are pleasant but narrow and not exceptional. Da Nang has My Khe: five kilometers of broad, clean, blue-flag sand with a proper break and no crowds by regional standards.
- Airport access. Da Nang International Airport is enormous, connects to almost every Southeast Asian hub, and is fifteen minutes from the city. Hoi An has no airport. Everyone flying in lands at Da Nang anyway.
- Hotel value. For a given quality level, hotel rates in Da Nang are lower than Hoi An. A four-star river-view room in Da Nang frequently costs less than a three-star boutique room in Hoi An’s Ancient Town.
- A working city. This is the thing that is hard to describe but easy to feel. Da Nang is a real Vietnamese city of a million people: markets, local restaurants, residents going about their lives. Hoi An’s center is, inevitably, a tourist economy.
- Scalability. If you want to add Hue, the Marble Mountains, or a longer day in the mountains, Da Nang is a better base. Everything is closer.
What Hoi An has that Da Nang does not
- The Ancient Town. A UNESCO-listed old trading port with 400-year-old merchant houses, silk lanterns, rivers and narrow lanes that are actually beautiful. Da Nang has nothing equivalent.
- Atmosphere at night. When the electric lights go off in the Ancient Town on the full moon, and the lanterns go on, it is genuinely magical. This is not a thing that exists in Da Nang.
- Tailoring. Hoi An is the best place in Asia to have clothing made. Dozens of tailors, competitive prices, quality that surprises people. A two-day turnaround is standard.
- A more contained trip. If you want one place where you can walk everywhere and never need a taxi, the Ancient Town delivers that. Da Nang requires transport.
- The food market. Hoi An has its own dishes — cao lau, white rose dumplings, banh mi of its own type — and the market is excellent.

The verdict for different kinds of traveler
You should base in Da Nang if:
- You want a beach holiday and the city is a bonus.
- You are flying in and out and want to minimize transfers.
- You are traveling with children (beach, pool, easy taxis).
- You are doing a longer stay and want variety.
- You care about value and do not want to pay the Hoi An premium.
You should base in Hoi An if:
- Atmosphere is your primary reason for going.
- You want to get things made and need multiple fittings.
- You are not interested in the beach.
- You want the simplicity of walking everywhere.
- You are going for a very short trip and want everything concentrated.
The combination that works best
Three or four nights in Da Nang, one or two nights in Hoi An. Start in Da Nang, cover the beach, the Dragon Bridge, the Marble Mountains. Then move to Hoi An for the old town, the tailors, the market. Take the train or a Grab between them — it takes thirty to forty minutes and costs almost nothing.
If time is short, base in Da Nang and do Hoi An as a full day trip. Leave early, get the old town before the tour buses, eat well, watch the lanterns at sunset, Grab home.
