Singapore is the easiest country in Asia to travel in and one of the most expensive places in the world to sleep. Everything works — the transport, the tap water, the signage, the safety — and the food, improbably for a city this wealthy, is world-class and cheap, because hawker centres are treated as national infrastructure rather than street food.
Why it's worth the flight
As a stopover it is close to unbeatable: a major hub airport, an efficient city to move through, and enough to fill two or three days without ever feeling difficult. As a destination it's a genuine three-culture city — Chinese, Malay and Indian — layered over a tropical island, with some of the most ambitious architecture and greenery anywhere.
When to go
Singapore is one degree off the equator, so it is hot and humid all year with no real seasons. It rains often and briefly. February is typically the driest stretch; the year-end months are wettest. Practically, the weather should not decide when you go — the events calendar and airfares matter more.
Where to base yourself
- Chinatown / Tanjong Pagar — best value in the centre, excellent food, well connected.
- Kampong Glam / Bugis — the Malay-Arab quarter, independent shops, the most character per square metre.
- Little India — cheapest beds, loudest streets, some of the best eating.
- Marina Bay — the postcard, the big hotels, the highest prices, and quiet at night once the offices empty.
What to eat
Eat at hawker centres, which are government-run food courts of individual specialist stalls, cheap and rigorously hygiene-graded. The national dishes worth working through: Hainanese chicken rice, chilli crab, laksa, char kway teow, bak kut teh, roti prata and satay. Look for the stalls with queues and the ones displaying hygiene grades prominently.
Getting around
The MRT is fast, clean, air-conditioned and reaches nearly everywhere including the airport. Get a stored-value card or use a contactless bank card directly at the gates. Taxis and ride-hailing are honest and metered. The city is walkable in patches but the heat is real — plan to move between air-conditioned spaces rather than strolling long distances in the middle of the day.

The honest caveat
Singapore is orderly to a degree some travellers find sterile, and laws around drugs, littering and public behaviour are strictly enforced with serious penalties — read them and take them seriously. It's also the one country in the region where your accommodation budget will be several times what it is next door. Many people find two or three days exactly right.
