Phuket is Thailand's biggest island and its most commercial beach destination, which means it gets written off by travellers who have only seen Patong. That's a mistake. Phuket is large, and the difference between its loudest strip and its quiet northern beaches is the difference between two entirely separate holidays.
Why it's worth the flight
It has an international airport, which makes it the easiest launching point in southern Thailand — the Phi Phi islands, Phang Nga Bay and Krabi are all reachable. And the island itself has genuinely beautiful beaches, an old town with Sino-Portuguese architecture that most visitors never see, and accommodation at every price point from hostel to some of the best resorts in Asia.
When to go
November to April is the dry, calm season and the reason the island fills up. May to October brings monsoon weather, rougher seas and much lower prices. Pay attention to the red flags on beaches during monsoon months — the currents on the west coast are genuinely dangerous and drownings happen every year.
Where to base yourself
- Patong — the nightlife strip. Loud, crowded, cheap, and the source of Phuket's reputation.
- Kata and Karon — good beaches, family-friendly, calmer, still plenty of restaurants.
- Bang Tao / Layan / Nai Thon (north-west) — the quiet, upmarket end. Long empty beaches, better resorts.
- Phuket Old Town — not a beach at all. Colourful shophouses, cafes, the best food on the island, and a completely different trip.
What to eat
Phuket Old Town is the food destination, not the beaches. Southern Thai cuisine is hotter and more seafood-driven than the rest of the country. Look for moo hong (Phuket-style braised pork belly), hokkien mee, and the local breakfast of dim sum, a legacy of Chinese migration. Beach-strip restaurants charge several times what old town costs for something worse.
Getting around
This is where Phuket is annoying. The island is big, public transport is thin, and tuk-tuk pricing in the tourist areas is famously cartel-like. Use Grab or Bolt where they operate. Many people rent a scooter, which makes everything easy — but only with a helmet, a proper licence and real insurance, and never hand over your passport as a deposit.

The honest caveat
Phuket has the most aggressive tourist economy in Thailand and the highest concentration of rental disputes and inflated pricing in the country. It also has excellent beaches and the best access to the Andaman islands. Both are true. Choose your side of the island deliberately and it's a very good trip; turn up in Patong expecting serenity and it isn't.
