Osaka is where Japan relaxes. Historically a merchant city rather than an imperial or administrative one, it has a reputation within Japan for being blunt, funny, and obsessed with food — the local saying is that Kyoto people bankrupt themselves on clothing and Osaka people bankrupt themselves on eating. It is the best-value base in the Kansai region and the most immediately likeable big city in the country.
Why it's worth the flight
Food, first. Then position: Kyoto is fifteen minutes away by fast train, Nara and Kobe a similar hop, so Osaka works as a cheaper, livelier base for the whole region. And the city itself is a genuinely good time — the neon of Dotonbori is one of the great urban sights in Asia.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the best and busiest — cherry blossom around late March into April, foliage in November. Summer is hot and humid. Winter is cold but manageable and much quieter. Avoid Golden Week in late April and early May and the mid-August Obon period unless you enjoy crowds and premium pricing.
Where to base yourself
- Namba / Dotonbori — the heart of the eating and nightlife. Loud, central, brilliant for a short stay.
- Umeda (Kita) — the northern hub, main station, department stores, better for onward travel.
- Shinsekai / Tennoji — old-school, cheaper, more local, slightly rough around the edges in a good way.
- Nakazakicho — small, quiet, cafes and vintage shops, a short walk from Umeda.
What to eat
Takoyaki, octopus dumplings from a street griddle. Okonomiyaki, the savoury cabbage pancake cooked in front of you. Kushikatsu, deep-fried skewers — and the one sacred rule, never double-dip in the communal sauce. Kitsune udon. And the underground food halls beneath the big department stores, which are among the best places to eat in Japan.
Getting around
The subway and JR loop cover the city thoroughly. Get an IC card and use it on everything. If you're doing Kyoto, Nara and Kobe as day trips, look at the regional rail passes — for a Kansai-based trip they often beat a nationwide pass. The city is flat and very walkable within districts.

The honest caveat
Osaka is short on conventional sights compared to Kyoto or Tokyo — the castle is a reconstruction and the temple count is low. Come for the food, the atmosphere and the base position. If you want serenity and gardens, that's Kyoto, and it's fifteen minutes away.
