Marrakech is a walled red city at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, and it is the most intense sensory experience most travellers will have on a short-haul flight from Europe. The medina is a labyrinth that has functioned the same way for a thousand years, and behind its blank walls are riads — courtyard houses — that are the entire reason to stay inside it.
Why it's worth the flight
Nowhere else in easy reach of Europe feels this different. The souks, the food, the architecture and the mountains behind the city combine into something that is genuinely another world three hours from Paris. And a good riad is one of the great accommodation experiences anywhere.
When to go
March to May and September to November are the windows. Summer is extremely hot — well over 40°C is normal, which makes the medina hard work. Winter is mild and pleasant by day, genuinely cold at night, and the Atlas has snow.
Where to base yourself
- The Medina — stay in a riad. It's the point. Expect to be walked to it the first time because you will not find it.
- Gueliz (Ville Nouvelle) — the French-built new town. Wide streets, restaurants, bars, far calmer.
- Hivernage — hotels and quiet, between the two.
- Palmeraie — resorts outside the city, for a very different, poolside trip.
What to eat
Tagine, obviously, but the good ones are slow and worth seeking out. Couscous is traditionally Friday food. Harira, the soup that breaks the fast. Mechoui, slow-roasted lamb. Msemen and baghrir for breakfast. And mint tea, poured from height, constantly.
Getting around
The medina is walking only — the lanes are too narrow for anything else, though scooters will still find you. Petit taxis should use the meter; agree a fare in advance if they refuse. For the Atlas, Essaouira or the desert, arrange a car and driver or a reputable tour.
Marrakech has specific, well-documented scams
The unofficial guide, the photo charge, the tannery mint — all avoidable if you know them in advance.

- Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk, when the food stalls set up and the square transforms.
- The Saadian Tombs and Bahia Palace for the tilework and plaster.
- Jardin Majorelle — book ahead, it's small and extremely popular.
- A hammam — the traditional bathhouse, either public or at a riad.
- A day in the Atlas Mountains or an overnight to the desert.
The honest caveat
Marrakech is high-pressure — persistent selling, the guide routine, and photo charges are constant in the medina. It wears some people down. Dress modestly, especially away from tourist areas, and be aware that solo female travellers report a higher level of unwanted attention here than in much of the region.
