Lombok is what a lot of people are actually looking for when they book Bali. An hour east by boat or a short flight, it has emptier beaches, a serious volcano to climb, world-class surf on the south coast, and a fraction of the traffic — while remaining close enough that adding it to a Bali trip is easy.
Why it's worth the flight
Space. Bali's beaches and roads are busy in a way Lombok's simply are not. It also has Mount Rinjani, one of the great treks in Southeast Asia, and the Gili Islands just offshore — three small car-free islands with clear water and good snorkelling.
When to go
May to September is dry season and the best window, with July and August busiest. The wet season from roughly November to March brings heavy rain and rougher crossings. Rinjani's trekking routes typically close during the rainy months and around the turn of the year — check current status before planning a climb.
Where to base yourself
- Kuta Lombok (south) — surf, dramatic bays, the fastest-developing area, and a good all-round base.
- Senggigi (west) — the older resort strip, quiet now, convenient for the ferry.
- The Gili Islands — Trawangan is the lively one, Air the balanced one, Meno the quiet one. No cars on any of them.
- Senaru or Sembalun (north) — the Rinjani trailhead villages, cool and green.
What to eat
Sasak cuisine is the local tradition and it is hot — the island's name is often linked to the chilli. Ayam taliwang, grilled chilli chicken, is the signature dish. Plecing kangkung, water spinach with a fierce sambal. Sate rembiga, sweet-spicy beef satay. Seafood on the coast is simple and excellent.
Getting around
Scooter is the local default, roads are quieter than Bali's, and the same rules apply — helmet, licence, insurance. Car and driver for the day is inexpensive and sensible for cross-island trips, as distances are longer than they look. Fast boats connect to Bali and the Gilis; crossings can be rough and are occasionally cancelled in bad weather.
The open-jaw move
Flying into Bali and out of Lombok, or vice versa, often costs no more and saves you a backtrack.

- Mount Rinjani — a serious two or three-day trek to a crater lake; go with a licensed guide and be honest about your fitness.
- The Gili Islands — snorkelling with turtles, no traffic, sunset on the west side.
- The south coast bays — Mawun, Selong Belanak, Tanjung Aan.
- Sasak villages inland, where traditional weaving and architecture survive.
- Benang Kelambu waterfalls in the interior.
The honest caveat
Infrastructure is thinner than Bali's — fewer restaurants, less nightlife, longer drives, patchier healthcare. Lombok sits in an active seismic zone and experienced serious earthquakes in 2018; the island has rebuilt, but it is worth being aware of. If you want convenience and variety, Bali; if you want space, Lombok.
