Hong Kong is the most vertical city on earth and, improbably, one of the greenest — roughly three quarters of its territory is countryside, and you can be on an empty hiking trail or a quiet beach forty minutes from the densest skyline in the world. It is expensive to sleep in, cheap to eat in, and the transport is close to flawless.
Why it's worth the flight
The contrast. Very few places let you go from a Michelin-starred dim sum lunch to a mountain ridge with a sea view to a fishing village in the same day, all on public transport. It's also a major long-haul hub, which makes it easy to fold into a bigger trip.
When to go
Autumn, roughly October to early December, is the best — dry, clear, warm. Spring is humid and often foggy, which matters because the views are the point. Summer is hot, very humid and in typhoon season. Winter is cool, dry and underrated.
Where to base yourself
- Causeway Bay / Wan Chai (Hong Kong Island) — central, endless food, good transport.
- Sheung Wan / Central — older streets, galleries, the escalator district, the best walking.
- Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon) — the harbour view side, more affordable, excellent for first visits.
- Mong Kok — the densest, cheapest, most relentlessly local part of the city.
What to eat
Dim sum, obviously, and best at a busy traditional teahouse rather than a hotel. Roast goose and char siu from a roast meat shop with the birds hanging in the window. Wonton noodles. Egg tarts and pineapple buns from a bakery. And cha chaan teng — the local diners serving milk tea and an eccentric Anglo-Chinese menu that exists nowhere else.
Getting around
The MTR is fast, cheap and comprehensive; get an Octopus card, which also works on ferries, buses, trams and in convenience stores. The double-decker trams on Hong Kong Island are slow, cheap and lovely. Ferries connect the islands. Taxis are metered and inexpensive by international standards.
Hong Kong is where room choice matters most
Rooms are small and the difference between a good one and a bad one is large. Ask for the right things and you'll get them.

- Victoria Peak — take the tram up, walk the circular path, and go late afternoon into dusk.
- The Star Ferry at night.
- Dragon's Back — the ridge hike with sea views, easily reached by bus.
- Lamma or Cheung Chau — car-free islands, seafood, beaches, an hour away.
- Temple Street or Mong Kok markets after dark.
The honest caveat
Accommodation is expensive and rooms are genuinely small — budget accordingly and prioritise location over size. Summer humidity is punishing. And the city has changed politically in recent years; check current entry requirements and local conditions before you travel, as you would anywhere.
