Edinburgh is built on and around extinct volcanoes, which is why it looks the way it does — a castle on a crag, a medieval Old Town tumbling down a ridge in narrow closes and wynds, and an elegant Georgian New Town laid out beside it. In August it hosts the largest arts festival on earth and roughly doubles in population.
Why it's worth the flight
Very few cities have this much drama in their geography. You can climb a proper hill in the middle of the city, walk a thousand-year-old street from a castle to a palace, and be in the Highlands within a couple of hours. And the whole centre is UNESCO-listed.
When to go
May to September for the best chance of weather. August is the Fringe and the International Festival — extraordinary, and the city is completely transformed, extremely crowded and expensive; book months ahead or avoid deliberately. Winter is dark and wet, though Hogmanay is famous for good reason.
Where to base yourself
- Old Town — atmospheric, central, steep, and busiest.
- New Town — Georgian elegance, better restaurants, flatter, quieter.
- Stockbridge — village-like, by the Water of Leith, excellent for a longer stay.
- Leith — the old port, now the best food neighbourhood in the city, twenty minutes out by tram.
What to eat
Haggis, properly cooked, is genuinely good and nothing like its reputation. Scottish seafood is superb — langoustines, scallops, smoked salmon. Cullen skink, a smoked haddock soup. A full Scottish breakfast. And whisky, ideally with someone who can explain the regions rather than at a tourist bar.
Getting around
Walk — the centre is compact, though the hills are constant. Buses are frequent and take contactless. A tram line connects the airport through the centre to Leith. The Old and New Towns are close together but separated by steep steps and bridges, which is worth knowing if you have mobility limits or heavy bags.
August doubles the price of everything
Edinburgh in August is a different economy. Shifting a week either side changes what the trip costs dramatically.

The honest caveat
August is wonderful and it is not a normal visit — accommodation prices multiply and the city is heaving. The rest of the year the weather is genuinely unreliable. And the Old Town's charm comes with steps, cobbles and gradients that are hard work.
