Athens spent years being treated as the place you pass through on the way to the islands. That was always a mistake and it's now an obvious one — the city has come out of its economic crisis with a serious food scene, some of Europe's best street art, and a rooftop-bar culture built around the fact that almost every terrace has a view of a 2,500-year-old temple.
Why it's worth the flight
The Acropolis is the Acropolis. But the Acropolis Museum beneath it is one of the best modern museums anywhere, the neighborhoods below it are genuinely enjoyable to spend time in, and Athens is now considerably better value than most of Western Europe.
When to go
April to early June and September to October are the windows — warm, clear, and the ruins are bearable. July and August are brutally hot and the Acropolis in midday summer is genuinely unpleasant and occasionally closed during heatwaves. Winter is mild, cheap and empty.
Where to base yourself
- Plaka — under the Acropolis, prettiest, most touristed.
- Monastiraki / Psyri — central, lively, best nightlife and street food.
- Koukaki — residential, walkable to the Acropolis, excellent value, where locals actually live.
- Exarchia — political, alternative, cheap, and not for everyone.
What to eat
Souvlaki and gyros from a proper counter — this is the everyday food and it's excellent. Meze at a tsipouradiko, small plates with a spirit. Moussaka and pastitsio done at a family taverna rather than a tourist one. Loukoumades, honey doughnuts. And Greek coffee, taken slowly.
Getting around
The metro is modern, cheap and connects the airport and Piraeus port. The historic center is walkable and mostly pedestrianised around the archaeological sites. Watch for pickpockets on the airport metro line and around Monastiraki. Taxis should use the meter; use an app to avoid the argument.

The honest caveat
Athens is a big, dense, sometimes scruffy city and it does not have the immediate prettiness of the islands. Summer heat is a serious constraint, not a minor discomfort. Give it two or three days and it will surprise you; give it one and you'll leave thinking it's just a stopover.
