Two different problems hide behind one word. The plug on the wall is a different shape, and the electricity coming out of it is a different voltage. An adapter fixes the first. A converter fixes the second. Confusing them is how people end up with a dead hair dryer, a scorched smell and a very awkward conversation with a hotel about a tripped circuit.

The two problems, separated

Problem one: shape. Wall sockets around the world use more than a dozen incompatible pin arrangements. Your plug physically will not go in. An adapter is a passive piece of plastic and metal that lets your pins reach the holes. It does absolutely nothing to the electricity.

Problem two: voltage. Broadly, the world runs on either roughly 100–127 volts or roughly 220–240 volts. If your device expects one and gets the other, the outcome is either a device that will not work or a device that is destroyed, sometimes dramatically. A converter or transformer actually changes the voltage.

THE RULE

An adapter changes the shape. A converter changes the electricity. If you buy the wrong one, the plug will still fit perfectly — right up until the moment the appliance dies.

The good news, which covers most of what you carry

Almost every modern electronic device is dual voltage — it is built to accept anything from about 100 to 240 volts and sort it out internally. Phone chargers, laptop bricks, camera chargers, tablets, e-readers, electric toothbrushes and battery packs are essentially all in this category.

For all of those you need only an adapter. No converter, no transformer, no risk.

You can verify this in about five seconds, and it is worth building the habit. Look at the small print on the plug or the power brick. If it says something like INPUT: 100–240V, 50/60Hz, it is dual voltage and it will work anywhere on earth with nothing more than a shape adapter. If it says only 120V or only 230V, it is single voltage and you have a real decision to make.

The devices that actually catch people out

The single-voltage survivors are almost always things that make heat, because heating elements draw a lot of power and are built for one supply:

Hair dryers and straighteners. The classic casualty. Enormous power draw, frequently single voltage, and the failure is immediate.

Curling irons, travel kettles, small heaters, some shavers, older medical devices. Check every one.

Our honest advice on hair dryers: do not travel with one and do not buy a converter for one. Every hotel above the most basic level has one on the wall, and a converter capable of handling that load is heavy, expensive and gets hot. If you genuinely need your own, buy a dual-voltage travel model with a switch — that is the clean solution and it removes the problem entirely.

Why a good adapter is worth more than the cheap one

An adapter is a two-dollar concept, so it is tempting to buy the two-dollar object. Three reasons not to:

Total ports. Hotel rooms are notoriously short of accessible sockets, frequently one usable one behind the bed. An adapter with several USB outputs turns that single socket into a charging station for the whole party, and removes the argument about whose phone gets the night shift.

It replaces your laptop charger. A modern GaN adapter delivering enough watts over USB-C will run most laptops. That is one less brick and one less cable.

Grip and safety. Cheap adapters sit loosely in foreign sockets and fall out under the weight of your own cable, and the internal contacts are not always what you would hope. This is the one category where the difference between the cheapest and a decent one is genuinely about not starting a fire.

Two things people still get wrong

Grounding. Some adapters carry the earth pin through and some do not. For a laptop this occasionally matters, and a two-pin-only adapter can leave a metal-bodied machine feeling faintly tingly to the touch. Buy one that carries the ground.

The USB ports on an adapter are not a converter. They deliver low-voltage USB power, which is safe everywhere. That says nothing about the pass-through socket, which delivers whatever the wall is delivering, straight through, unchanged.

The bottom line

Check the small print on each device before you pack it. If it reads 100–240V, an adapter is all you will ever need, and one good universal adapter with plenty of USB output solves your entire trip. If it reads a single voltage and it makes heat, leave it at home and use the one on the hotel wall. Almost nobody actually needs a converter — they just need to spend five seconds reading a plug.
